Pops Fireworks History and Heritage
The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular started – like many
things do – as just a simple idea. In September 1973, David
Mugar suggested to Boston Pops Conductor Arthur Fiedler that
in order to revive the diminishing Esplanade concert series
it might be a good idea to play Tchaikovsky’s "1812
Overture" with a few added extras.
For the next Fourth of July, howitzer cannons, fireworks
and church bells were all added to the concert so that, as
Fiedler said, “All hell could break loose.” And for the
first time, a July 4th fireworks display took place over the
Charles River.
Now 38 years later, the Boston Pops Fireworks
Spectacular is known as the premier Independence Day
celebration in the nation. Each year, since its inception,
hundreds of thousands of people come from all over the
country to the banks of the Charles River to celebrate
America’s birthday while another seven million tune in
nationally on the CBS Television Network to view the event
during a live one-hour primetime special. Locally, the
Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular is an institution seen on
WBZ-TV Channel 4 from 8:00PM to 11:00PM.

Boston
Harborfest: June 29- July 4, 2010!
This elite 65-member instrumental
ensemble, founded in 1946, is the oldest and largest
of the Field Band’s four performing components. They
have performed in all 50 states and 25 foreign
countries for audiences totaling more than 100
million. Tours have taken the band throughout the
United States, Canada, Mexico, South America,
Europe, the Far East, and India. More than six
decades as the military's most traveled musicians
have earned them the title, "The Musical Ambassadors
of the Army." The Concert Band regularly travels and
performs with the Soldiers’ Chorus, together
presenting a powerful and diverse program of
marches, overtures, popular music, patriotic
selections, and instrumental and vocal solos. The
organization has also performed joint concerts with
many of the nation’s leading orchestras, including
the Boston Pops, Cincinnati Pops, and Detroit
Symphony Orchestra.
The Soldiers’ Chorus is the vocal
complement of The United States Army Field Band of
Washington, D.C. The 29-member mixed choral ensemble
travels throughout the nation and abroad, performing
as a separate component and in joint concerts with
the Army Field Band. The chorus is currently
conducted by Captain Leonel A. Peña and has
performed in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, India,
the Far East, and throughout Europe. Soldiers’
Chorus performances often include the music of
Broadway, opera, barbershop quartet, and Americana.
This versatility has earned the Soldiers’ Chorus an
international reputation for presenting musical
excellence and inspiring patriotism.
Long before the winter of 2011
relented and when the Esplande was covered with
towering piles of snow, the producers of the Boston
Pops Fireworks Spectacular and California based
fireworks company, Pyro Spectaculars, were hard at
work creating and choreographing a new fireworks
display for a new Fourth of July crowd.
Pyrotechnic designer, Eric Tucker,
along with pyrotechnics music supervisor, Don
Dorsey, and producers for the Boston Pops Fireworks
Spectacular came together to discuss the essence of
this year’s Fourth of July event and endeavor to
develop a musical score this year that celebrates
our country, our families and the unique American
tradition of Fourth of July fun.
