The value of confidence
Workers want a
leader they can believe in
By Elizabeth Cooney, Globe
Correspondent
HERB CHAMBERS
WAS in the middle of expanding his car
sales business when the recession hit,
but he kept right on going with plans to
open new dealerships and expand others.
Now Chambers is hiring, and employees
are glad they’re at a company that’s
growing while their industry is gasping.
When the climate is
gloomy, employees want company leaders
to offer confidence, communication, and
a sense that a bright future is being
built.
Workers at these
companies believe their professional
fate is in good hands:

Herb Chambers
Companies
Twenty-five years ago, it
wasn’t the norm for an auto dealer’s
service department to wash the cars
before returning them to customers, but
Herb Chambers did it. “My feeling was a
clean car always ran better than dirty
one did,’’ said Chambers, head of his
namesake business.
This year, going against
the grain meant completing $50 million
in new facilities. It’s that kind of
thinking that has allowed Chambers auto
dealerships to grow while other dealers
are struggling or even closing down.
That sits well with
employees, especially in the
high-pressure world of auto sales. “I
think it gives our people a great deal
of confidence,’’ Chambers said. “They
feel good about our company. They
believe they are in the right place.’’
One after another,
Chambers employees surveyed for Top
Places cited the boss himself and the
company’s growth as reasons for their
satisfaction.
Not that Chambers has
escaped the recession entirely. Sales
are down 19 percent this year compared
to last year, when the expansion was
planned. But national numbers are down
even more: from 30 to 34 percent.
“We never had a doubt
about the future,’’ said Michael
Hannafin, service director at Flagship
Motorcars, a newly refurbished Chambers
dealership in Lynnfield. “He’s a guy who
believes in what he is doing. That
trickles down.’’
Hannafin said Chambers
recently pulled aside a manager who had
reorganized a parts department, saying
he wanted the rest of the company to
copy the system. “You can’t measure what
that does for an employee,’’ Hannafin
said. “That guy was on cloud nine and
the rest of his team was motivated,
because he was singled out in a positive
way by the CEO of the company.’’

Herb Chambers Kia of Burlington
Letter From Herb
Introducing the all new Herb
Chambers Kia of Burlington!
Last
month we were pleased to
welcome our latest addition
with the opening of the all
new Herb Chambers
KIA of Burlington.
You may or may not know that
Kia is of the same pedigree
as Hyundai; both have really
come on strong in the last
few years with amazing
value, design & the industry
leading warranty. The KIA
Motors tagline is “The
Power to Surprise®” and
with that in mind, you can
bet they’re ready to
deliver, and so are WE!
I’m
particularly excited by one
of their newest models,
which is the 2011 KIA Optima
slated to be unveiled at the
very popular New York Auto
Show in April. I can tell
you that preliminary photos
reveal a very stylish
exterior
and an
extended wheelbase, in
addition to what the
industry calls a “tiger”
front end, meaning
aggressive. This new beauty
is also rumored to have LED
accent strip lighting (´a la
Audi) above the fog lights
with flared wheel arches and
front fender vents. Please
see photo to the
right, “What’s not to like?”
There’s
also much more as Kia now
offers 11 models; (Borrego,
Sedona, Sorento, Sportage,
Forte, ForteKoup, Optima,
Rio, Rio5, Rondo and Soul)
each one of them purposely
built to please almost any
audience as there truly is
something for everybody.
Another
favorite is the new KIA
Soul. The name is very
apropos because this little
beauty truly has soul! You
can tell from the photo to
the left that this car is
cute, spirited & practical
and just right for the “Gen
Y” intended audience. With
this car, KIA edges a bit
into BMW / MINI territory,
heavily pitching
personalization, offering
many accessories and ways to
attach your identity to your
Soul, with everything from
side view mirrors in
accenting colors, to seats
that glow in the dark. Their
goal with the Soul is to
stand out in a sea of
sameness.
Again; I
quote “The Power to
Surprise“.
If you’re
curious about the complete
KIA model line-up, I invite
you to get to know them all

all for that matter; rest
assured that at Herb

Auto dealer
Herb Chambers plans to break ground
tomorrow for a new
Audi/Porsche dealership in Burlington.
(Above
is a rendering of what the new dealership
will look like.)
Six weeks
ago, Chambers presided over a similar
ground-breaking ceremony in Westborough
for an
Infiniti
dealership, and in the next few weeks,
he plans to do the same for a new
BMW
dealership in Sudbury.
The US
economy may be sluggish; consumers are
fretting about high gas prices, but
Chambers is forging ahead and reinvesting
in his New England auto dealership empire.
In Burlington,
that means relocating the
Audi/Porsche dealership he bought
about a year ago to larger space nearby.
"I hear
everywhere that the auto business is
bad," he said, "but we don't experience
it."
Domestic
auto brands, such as
Ford,
General Motors, and
Chrysler
are challenged, Chambers said, but some
foreign brands are a different story.
According
to Chambers, officials at
Honda Motor Co. told him that Honda
volume sales in New England were up
18 percent in April compared to a year
ago.

Four
of Chambers' 44 dealerships are Honda
and 15 are for Ford, GM, or Chrysler
brands, he said.
With
recent ads heavily promoting his used-car
business, Chambers said he also saw
an uptick in used-car sales in April.
Sales
of gas-sipping
Vespas
are booming.
Last
month, Chambers said he sold nearly
80, compared with 35 for April 2007.
Speaking
about the auto market in general, Chambers
said: "The market hasn't gotten any
bigger. We're just getting a bigger
piece of it."

Herb Chambers is 14th in the Nation
March 30, 2008 - By Peter C.T. Elsworth - Journal Staff Writer
PROVIDENCE — Herb Chambers has retained his position as the 14th largest auto dealership in the nation, according to the latest listing by Automotive News.
“We’re obviously thrilled about it,” said Chambers from the Caribbean, where he was holding a sales meeting last week.
The ranking is based on new vehicle retail sales, with Somerville, Mass.-based Chambers coming in with 32,386 units. Combined with sales of used vehicles and wholesale sales, the company, which has three dealerships in Rhode Island and 41 in Massachusetts, sold a total of 63,933 vehicles last year. Group revenue was $1.7 billion.
At the same time, Chambers said he expects sales to be up by about $200 million this year — “sales could go to $2 billion if we’re lucky” — partly because of the full-year contribution of luxury dealership Foreign Motors West, which he acquired last June, and partly because of expected increases in same-store sales.
“I’m pretty optimistic, unlike most of the industry,” he said. “If you buy into (the doom and gloom), you can lull yourself into poor performance.”
The top dealership in the country last year was Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based AutoNation, with 683,867 total sales and revenues of $17.6 billion. Number two was Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based Penske Automotive Group, which owns Inskip Automall in Warwick, with 388,642 total sales and revenues of $12.8 billion.
“2007 was supposed to be a tough year but it was our best year ever,” Chambers said. “And I think 2008 will be better than a repeat performance.”
“We’ve got great people,” he added, noting the company currently has about 2,000 employees. “I know everyone says that, but I really believe it. That’s why we’re successful. It’s not my ability.”
Chambers said when he started 25 years ago with a Cadillac dealership in New London, his plan was merely to grow the company.
“There were 33,000 dealerships in the country back then, and we were number 33,000 and one,” he said. “Now there are 22,000 dealerships and we’re very pleased to be number 14. We’re appreciative, but we’re not gloating.”

Herbert Chambers who
resides in Boston and Connecticut owns the
Herb Chambers dealerships. Prior to entering
the automobile business, Herb was the
founder of A-Copy America, which became the
largest office copier dealer in the world.
In 1983 he merged
that company with what is now know as Ikon.
They are an international company listed on
the New York Stock Exchange and operate in 8
countries. Herb became the single largest
shareholder in this Fortune 500 Company.
In 1985, Herb
sought another business challenge. He has
always been a car enthusiast, so he looked
to the automobile business as a place loaded
with opportunity. He was right! He started
out with the purchase of a dealership in New
London, CT. At that time there were 33,000
authorized auto dealerships.
Herb likes to say,
We became number 33,000 and one! Our auto
business has grown very fast and today if we
were publicly owned (which we are not) we
would be ranked the 7th largest in the
United States. That is a long way from
33,001!
Following the
acquisition of the dealership in New London
(Cadillac and Oldsmobile) another Cadillac
dealership was acquired with the approval of
General Motors in Providence, Rhode Island.
This dealership is a landmark along
Interstate 95 in Providence. That same year,
Hyundai was entering the U.S. market and had
many qualified applicants apply for the
dealership in Hartford, CT. After reviewing
the credential of all the applicants,
Hyundai chose Herb Chambers to be their
dealer.
Approximately six
months later, Mercedes Benz, BMW and Porsche
dealerships were available in Boston.
Needless to say, many people wanted these
prestigious automobiles to sell and many
applied. Only one was chosen for all three
manufacturers, Herb Chambers.
Similar experiences
occurred with other franchises. When Toyota
opened its new Lexus division, they chose
Herb Chambers above all other dealers to
represent them on the Automile in Norwood.
They made the right
choice, as Herb Chambers Lexus of Norwood is
the largest and most successful dealer in
all of New England. Herb Chambers now has
three Honda locations, Burlington, Boston
and Seekonk, Massachusetts. Herb Chambers is
the largest Honda dealer in New England. He
also has the largest volume Porsche, BMW,
Hyundai, Dodge and Saturn dealerships in New
England and his two Mercedes locations are
ranked one and two in New England.
The Herb Chambers
automobile dealerships do a billion dollars
in sales a year and we have over twelve
hundred employees. That is more than three
times larger than any other dealer in New
England. Last year, 33,000 people chose Herb
Chambers as the place to buy their new or
used vehicle.
We have won more
J.D. Power Certified retailer awards that
any other automobile dealer in the country.
Our twenty-three dealerships include:
Chrysler, Hyundai, Lexus, BMW, Porsche,
Saab, Infiniti, Cadillac, Mazda, Ford, two
Toyota dealerships, two Kia dealerships, two
Dodge dealerships, two Mercedes Benz
dealerships, two Saturn dealerships, three
Honda dealerships and we recently became the
exclusive Mini and Vespa dealers in Boston.
Herb believes that
we have achieved phenomenal success in the
automobile dealership business because of
the education he received from other dealers
prior to entering the business. Having a
huge passion for automobiles and acquiring
hundreds of them for himself and his
companies he likes to say he had been a
“victim” of more car dealers that anyone he
knows. Through these experiences we know the
things to do and more importantly the things
not to do so that a client of ours has a
pleasant ownership experience.
Ours is a great
company to work for.
We have great
benefits like a 401K plan where the company
matches our investment by 50%. We have great
work environments, great training, the best
franchises and incredible recognition
programs. Every year all of our employees
come together for an awards ceremony and
banquet. The top ten percent of our
employees are recognized as what we call
“Champions of Excellence”. That event costs
Herb Chambers a half a million dollars every
year. He knows it is worth every dime
because it motivates all of us to do a great
job for our customers. We all want to be
“Champions”. We choose to work for Herb
Chamber because he is the best person to
work for in the automobile industry. Our
customers choose Herb Chamber because he is
simply to best, period.
I know if you chose
to buy your vehicle from our company you
will have made the right decision. I made
the right decision when I chose to work for
Herb and I realize it every day. Oh, by the
way did I tell you about the money back
guarantee on our pre-owned cars?
