Wonder Bar: A Brief
History
Popular with area students and young professionals looking
to take a break from Allston-Brighton's beery sports bars,
Wonder Bar provides a classy alternative. With its dark
colors and designer martinis, the venue emits a classic
lounge vibe. Upstairs you’ll find high ceilings, red-brick
walls, and wood-paneled floors accented by a dimly lit
cognac glow. Downstairs you’ll find a glowing, modern bar
with a true underground feel.
Wonder Bar is definitely not your normal A-B watering hole;
it has a rich history that stands out on Harvard Ave.
Formerly Bunratty's in the early ‘60s, 186 Harvard Avenue
has been host to many famous bands. Frank Zappa, Aerosmith,
Bruce Springsteen, and even
Frank Sinatra all played here, bringing
the classic sounds of American music to an otherwise sleepy
Allston.
In
the mid 80’s, Bunratty’s changed hands, becoming Local 186.
While bands from around the Boston area still played at the
venue, it had more of the feel of a biker bar, featuring
billiards tables and darts on the lower level.
Unfortunately, by the early ‘90s, the rock ‘n roll scene in
Allston had faded considerably, and Local 186 was forced to
reinvent itself again.
Under new ownership, 186 Harvard Ave was renamed Wonder Bar.
The focus changed, shifting from raucous bikers to a more
cultured, relaxed experience. An open-concept kitchen was
installed, providing full-service, high-quality dining. Jazz
bands played nightly, contributing to a classy,
sophisticated atmosphere that persists today.
Fast forward to 2008, where the lineup of DJ’s is legendary
and the
sound system
is solid. Open 7 nights a week with a kitchen serving till
midnight, it reflects the image and attraction it has always
had, while building upon its history to provide a welcoming
atmosphere to patrons from all walks of life. Guests enjoy
freshly made appetizers and gourmet quesadillas made right
in front of them; likewise, the highly trained staff draws
upon the extensive collection of liquors to create some
truly amazing cocktails. We invite you to come see for
